Javier Valerio studied at Indiana University (under Eugene Rousseau). He also studied with Yushi Ishiwata, Jean Lansing, and Iwan Roth. In 2001, he obtained a Master’s in Jazz Studies at Florida International University (where he was taught by Gary Campbell), where he collaborated with the Classical Saxophone Studio and the New World School of the Arts in Miami and was a member of the Florida Saxophone Quartet. In 2013, Javier Valerio obtained the title of Doctor of Musical Arts from the University of Kansas. This title allowed him to perform at Carnegie Hall with the University of Kansas Wind Ensemble. Javier Valerio performs as a soloist with various orchestras, mainly in Latin America, but also during World Saxophone Congresses and at conferences of the North American Saxophone Alliance. He has given concerts, conferences, and master classes all over the world, including in Russia, Japan, Canada, the United States, Chile, Scotland, France, and Germany. Javier Valerio is a founding member of the SONSAX quintet. A real kingpin of the saxophone world in Latin America, he founded the Saxophone Studio, where he teaches as Emeritus Professor of the University of Costa Rica and is Director of the Instrumental Department. He campaigns actively for the recognition of the Latin American classical repertoire. In this capacity, he set up and chairs ALASAX (Alianza Latinoamericana de Saxofonistas) and also set up the Sax Fest Costa Rica International and the Costa Rica International Saxophone Competition.
