Leblanc

Philippe Leblanc is a graduate of the Royal Brussels Conservatory, where he won First Prize in Clarinet (1978) and Saxophone (class given by François Daneels, 1980), and was awarded the Diplôme Supérieur in Chamber Music (1986), and of the Royal Liège Conservatory, where he won First Prize in Chamber Music (1982) and was awarded the Diplôme Supérieur in Clarinet (class given by Rigobert Mareels, 1985). He went on to further studies of the clarinet with soloists such as Walter Boeykens, Serge Dangain, and Roland Simoncini and of the saxophone with international soloists such as François Daneels, Etienne Verschuren, Jacques Pelzer, Greg Badolato, John Ruocco, and Joe Lovano. A laureate of several competitions (including Pro Civitate and Tenuto), he has built up a career as a soloist and chamber musician and has worked with most of Belgium’s orchestras. An eclectic musician, he has also been active in a variety of other domains, including jazz (with, for example, Lou Bennett and Calvin Owens), French chanson (with Julos Beaucarne, William Sheller, and others), songs for children (with Gibus, Christian Merveille, Jofroi, and Raphy, for example), music for fi lm and the theatre, New Age music (with Bernard Lhoir), and ethnic music (including Kabyle, Brazilian, Jewish, and black African music). He is a member of the New Belgian Sax Quartet and of the Klezmer Jazz Band (of which he is a founder member) and has recorded two CDs with those groups. Philippe Leblanc is currently Professor at the Royal Liège Conservatory and at the Académie de Musique in Woluwé-Saint-Pierre. An active member of the Music Committee of the International Adolphe Sax Association, he is a member of the jury of the Competition for Young Saxophonists and a member of the Arbitration Committee of the Adolphe Sax International Competition.
